Cuban Frita Burger

Cuban Frita Burger

These delicious little burgers always make Liz homesick for Miami, where she grew up. Fritas were very popular in Cuba, where they were sold at roadside stands.

In Miami, there are places that still sell them like that. If you are ever there, you must try the fritas at El Rey de las Fritas in Little Havana. ¡Ay, qué rico!

INGREDIENTS

MAKES 8 BURGERS, OR 4 SERVINGS

  • 1 cup plain dry bread crumbs ¼ cup milk
  • pound ground beef round
  • small onion, finely chopped
  • large egg
  • cloves garlic, minced
  • teaspoons ketchup
  • teaspoon sweet paprika
  • teaspoon salt
  • teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper
  • teaspoon ground cumin
  • teaspoon dried oregano

INSTRUCTION

  • Combine the bread crumbs and milk in a small mixing bowl and set aside.
  • Gently mix the beef, half of the onion, the egg, garlic, ketchup, paprika, salt, pepper, cumin, and oregano together in a medium-size mixing bowl.
  • Fold in the bread crumb mixture and mix thoroughly.
  • Form into 8 patties, each a little less than ½ inch thick.
  • Lightly oil the grill or a skillet over medium-high heat and cook the burgers to the desired degree of doneness, 2 to 4 minutes per side for medium.
